Magic for the Solo Person

Magic for the Solo Person

Do what Thou will shall be the whole of the Law

So not everyone has a community to go to, to actually do magic rituals with. It feels like a lonely path sometimes, and you may feel like you are alone in the world. Surprisingly, this is a common issue among the students of the Art and Science of the Occult.

To make matters worse, it seems like so many Magick Rituals are made for groups of people, especially when we are looking at the Occult practices and the ceremonial rituals involved.

I admit, when I first start Occult Studies and practices, I was not happy to see that so many rituals involved so many people. I had no one to do rituals with, and even now I really don’t, as my wife just is not into Occultism. I will say, though, that a helpful book Call Homemade Magick by Lon Milo helped me out a lot. If you are interested in that book, click here!

So let’s look at Magic for the Solo Person!

First Know that Magic for the Solo is okay and Historic!

First, you have to realize it is okay to practice magic alone! Magic is primarily an unconscious force that we bring to reality through practices that involve visualization and the use of our senses. Magick calls forth the Deities of the Universe, which are ever present within the Collective Unconscious.

After all, the goal of the Occult is to reach Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel. This goal is very much attainable, and there are rituals designed specifically for solo practitioners to reach this stage of Alchemy done by a solo rabbienlightenment. In later post I will be talking about one in particular.

Perhaps more importantly, though, throughout history, especially in the Middle Ages, Magick was seen as a practice that was done in secret. This view of Magick is often expressed in paintings of old men with long beards calling upon demonic forces and using crystal balls.

Though Magick was frowned upon them because of the Catholic Church and it’s influence, there were still many who practiced it. It is well-known and documented that Priest of the Church were involved in Magick.

What’s more, scientist at that time were also interested in Occult practices. Alchemy was directly effect the teachings of the Cabala. Many times these scientists worked a loan to learn the secrets of the natural elements.

The Goal of the Occult needs no other person but YOU!

As I have stated, the Goal of the Occult is the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel. in fact, there are not many rituals that call upon other people to reach this goal.

The process starts withinIndeed, most rituals that have the Ultimate Goal in mind involve a single person, and are usually pretty intense. This should be encouraging news to everyone reading because it means you can still reach Individuation without the need of others in the rituals.

This benefit may not apply to some who do no wish to reach the Ultimate Goal, but if you are a student of Occult, this should really be your high goal, or at least a goal at some point.

If this is your goal, know that you can reach this goal even through solo meditation or yoga. The goal of the Occult is one that involves the individual and what works best for them, not what works best for others. It is an objective goal that leads to subjective results.

Find a School of Magick to join

I must say, this is a process I’m going through right now, and it can be pretty intense at times. There are many ones that you can join, ranging from the Golden Dawn, to the Order of the Silver Star.

If you are looking for a recommendation, I am recommend checking out the Order of the Silver Star. It is the Magick School that Aleister Crowley started up, and to join is free, you just need the books for it. I’m going to attach their home page here. If you feel like it is something you would be interested in contact them via email. Just know, this is not a decision to lightly go into. It is a very serious one and it involves a lot of work and reading, but the benefits are very rewarding.

On top of this, you can join a local Magick Temple like that of the OTO.  I have not been able to go to a Gnostic Mass before, but I have seen a great video on it and I’ll leave that below. (WARNING, THIS VIDEO CONTAINS NUDITY AND IS UNSUITABLE FOR PEOPLE UNDER 18.)

Join an Online Community or Start One of your own! love teaching and talking about Magick ordeals! That being said, there are countless online communities and Facebook Groups one can join. I’m in four different ones myself.

Having an online community is great for several reasons. It is so much easier to talk to someone online, and ask important questions without actually having to say it.

There is less judgment, and people are all on the same path as you. Some may be farther along, some may be behind, but we are all here for each other, as it should be.

Networking is important to stay connected

If you want to create an online community that is okay too! The trick will be to get like-minded people to join too. I assumed that may pose a problem for many who are reading this because you are probably a solo student who does not know many people who practice the Arts.

If you do though, or you can find them quickly, this is a great route as you can cater it to your needs, and others can join as well, if that is something they feel they need.

Conclusion

So I had a lot to say today on the Solo Practitioner, but that is probably because I know how it can feel at times. But know you are not actually alone, and there are many of us, all connected within the Collective Unconscious of mankind, and we too will work on this process with you!

  1. I love this topic, and your article is very informative. Occult can be a difficult area as is any Spiritual Quest. Never give up and yes find like minded people.
You have peaked my interest in this area, thank you

    1. I am glad to see I’ve peaked your interest! There is so much more to the occult than people often realize, as many have a mistaken notion based off Hollywood. As

  2. You’re website is so unique, thanks for providing information about going solo! You have a point about multi-people rituals.
Honestly, I wish more people knew that they could do tarot cards solo as well.
I know it’s not the same, but it’s pretty magical to call upon something other than myself.

    1. Oh my friend, honestly I feel like Tarot is right up there with other occult rituals! To me, tarot doesn’t tell my past, present, and future is (though it can), but the majority of the time it tells us the spiritual nature and journey we will be travelling. You have literally opened up another whole series for me to write about!! Thank you!!!

Hi, the occult is an interesting topic for sure. I like how you offer some schools to check out that are free. I also appreciate that you discuss that it takes serious commitment and learning.

What would you advise for a beginner of the Occult that wants to try out some spells? Or am I thinking of something different?

Also, how much time is involved to actually learning and implementing the occult into ones life, and is the occult considered ethical?

    Thanks and good work.

Thanks for the awesome post!  My best advice to a beginner is to not really try spells, but to do ritualistic magick.  Start off doing the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram.  It’s an effective and short ritual.  It shouldn’t take more than five to ten minutes a day.  I believe it takes a lot of effort to practice the occult science, but maybe not for the same reasons you are thinking.  Occult science is more than Magick Rituals.  We see and practice the occult in every day life..

Magic and the Solo person is an interesting article.  Its an like an introduction to the topic of the occult.  I found the sampling of ideas from the history to the suggestion of practice alone every interesting.  I appreciated the addition of your personal journey here and there in the article.  I am always interested in the personal spiritual quest.  The thing that I did not really see is an over arching purpose other than to gain knowledge and draw closer to the one.  There didn’t seem to be much indication of where that leads for the world, creation or those outside the group.  Thank you for the article.  The rest of the site looks interesting.   am going to look further.

I have nobody to do magic with here in my small town. Been trying to do Wicca magics for the last few years and it’s interesting but I feel conflicted about solo magic. Is Wicca the magic you mention in your post on solo magic? Or is there a different kind of magic? I’m conflicted over solo magic or group magic. On the one hand it seems logical that magic would be stronger in a group but on the other I have suffered from social anxiety and depression for years. What would you recommend for me? Thank you.

    1. Jessie Mosley

Wicca is an interesting practice, but I personally do not do Wicca.  I prefer a more methodical, ritualistic type of Magick that you find in practices like Thelema, or the Golden Dawn.  I would recommend going down a path of solo magick first, and learn some of the basics.

I am intrigued by this topic really. Although I don’t know much about the occult, it looks really interesting. I believe this post will help those that want to go into solo.

It looks really difficult, challenging and it requires, focus, commitment, self motivation and a lot of dedication from what I have read here so far

    1. Jessie Mosley

It does take time, but in the end it is worth it!

  7. Techie

    Hi Jessie Mosley,

This topic is quite interesting. I would not have believed that people still practice magic. Before, I hear the word “Occult”,I always think they are bad spiritual people, aren’t they?

From my point of view and from what I know according to my belief, magic is evil and should not be practiced. Please I would love to hear your take on this.

PS: can I really practice magic and do magic? 😲

    1. Jessie Mosley

I don’t think they are bad.  Occult deals with self knowledge, and knowledge of the world outside of the realm of science.  I think you can practice Magick if you are open to it!
